What Makes People Think Smoking is Cool?
The question of why people have long thought that smoking is cool is a good one, since most people know by now that smoking is very, very bad for your health – and the health of those around you. So what made this very dangerous habit one that many people equate with being cool, tough, stylish, and fashionable?
Chances are, Hollywood had much to do with this. Think back to the “golden age” of movies and television in the 1940’s, 50’s, and 60’s, and no doubt most of the major stars you picture were constantly seen holding a cigarette. From James Dean’s slouchy stance in his legendary t-shirt and leather jacket, to Humphrey Bogart and Sean Connery conversing with a smoke dangling from their lips, to Audrey Hepburn making the cigarette holder a fashion staple from her role in “Breakfast at Tiffany’s,” cigarettes were as popular as hairspray.
But the real question about cigarettes and “cool” is what makes you think they’re this way. Do you personally find smoking to be fashionable, fun, stylish, tough, and anything else admirable?
There’s a reason that the FCC placed major restrictions on the depiction of cigarette smoking on television and most movie producers followed suit. Many of these people realized soon enough that smoking is not cool, it’s not tough, it’s not admirable and fashionable – at least, the effects of smoking certainly aren’t! There’s nothing stylish about an iron lung, there’s nothing cool about hacking up a piece of your lung every time you try to laugh.
So now is the time for you to step back and give some serious consideration to your own thoughts and views about smoking and perhaps investigate ways to stop smoking. Sure, you may equate it with your past screen idol or you might assume that other people admire you and your two-pack-a-day habit, but isn’t it time to seriously think about where smoking fits into your life right now? Isn’t it time to realize that while Hollywood may have fed the American public a lot of imagery and imagination “way back when,” that even they have gotten on the anti-smoking bandwagon?
Only by giving some serious thought about why you think smoking is not only acceptable but tough and admirable will you then be able to take the next step toward finally being able to walk away from this rather un-cool habit.
